Mark Warner was interviewed on CTV Your Morning about the prospects for a trade war between the United States and China and the implications for Canada (September 19, 2017) On August 14th, President Trump directed the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to determine whether to investigate any of China’s laws, policies, practices, or actions that may be unreasonable or discriminatory and that may be harming American intellectual property rights, innovation, or technology development. On August 18th, USTR Lighthizer formally initiated an investigation of China under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. On September 13th, President Trump prohibited the proposed acquisition of Lattice Semiconductor Corporation by China Venture Capital Fund Corporation Limited pursuant to a recommendation of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Mr. Warner, a Canadian and U.S. lawyer, has advised governments on trade policy and trade negotiations and previously worked on trade and competition issues as counsel in the OECD Trade Directorate. Mr. Warner was Legal Director of the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development & Trade.
